Supporting the Morgan County Backpacks program in Berkeley Springs, WV

Anyone who knows anything at all about America’s Got Talent winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. knows he has a big heart in addition to an astonishing voice.

This performer has never forgotten his Logan, W.Va., roots, his own bout with homelessness, and his rise from rags (literally, working-in-a-car-wash rags!) to riches. Murphy gives back in a big way.

Along with his Berkeley Springs concert at the Star Theatre December 11th, Murphy will be giving back in a “Meet & Greet,” held from 6 to 7 pm at TreeFest, located in the Morgan Arts Council’s Ice House (the corner of Independence and Mercer Streets) to benefit Morgan County Backpacks. The event is open only to concert ticket holders, and admission will be donations of foods from the Morgan County Backpacks’ “Desired Food Donation List.” That includes plastic jars of peanut butter, canned pasta meals such as Chef Boyardee, and canned soups. Monetary gifts will also be accepted.

TreeFest, a part of A Dickens of a Christmas in Berkeley Springs, presents a perfect photo op for participants. A magical indoor forest of unique and beautiful trees, each decorated by a local business or organizations, TreeFest is open the night of the 13th exclusively for Murphy’s fans, and makes a beautiful backdrop for the event.

Morgan County Backpacks aims to “bag child hunger” by providing bags of food each week that are sent home with children who have little or no food to eat over the weekend. The program currently serves 320 children in grades K through 12, or about 12.5% of the school population. All foods collected go to Morgan County kids.

“The need is so great,” says Morgan County Backpacks Chairperson Susan Caperton. “We are so grateful for Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. and his team for this opportunity to help our kids.”
